Malaysia’s long-awaited Electric Train Service (ETS) extension from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru is set to officially launch in August 2025. The new ETS train marks a transformative milestone for rail travel in the region. First concepted in 2017, the RM9.5 billion electrified double-tracking project will finally connect Kuala Lumpur to Johor’s southern gateway via the Gemas-JB Sentral route. Wonderfully, this reduces travel time from the current seven hours by diesel train to between 3.5 and 4.5 hours. Here’s what we know.
Kuala Lumpur-Johor Bahru ETS train
This modern rail corridor will feature 11 stations across major Johor districts. This includes Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, before arriving at JB Sentral–with trains reaching speeds of up to 140km/h.
The ETS3 train sets, already delivered and undergoing final testing, are designed with passenger comfort and convenience in mind. Each train will offer 312 seats, onboard WiFi, USB charging ports, and generous luggage space–catering to both daily commuters and long-distance travellers.
Meanwhile, there will be 22 daily services planned and a capacity of 300 to 500 passengers per trip. Plus, ETS is expected to serve around 3,000 riders daily to provide a reliable and efficient alternative to the four hour drive or existing slower train options.
Interestingly, this new electrified route represents the completion of the West Coast Rail Electrification Programme in Malaysia. Additionally, the ETS extension is strategically timed to complement the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is set to open in 2026.
Why is this new route beneficial to Singapore?
The Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru ETS launch gives Singaporeans the opportunity to enjoy seamless, faster access to Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia’s northern states. In turn, travellers can bypass road traffic and border congestion. The ETS at Johor Sentral, paired with the future RTS link, creates a compelling alternative to flights or road trips between Singapore and Malaysia.
