Bill Gates announced the opening of the first Gates Foundation office in Southeast Asia. The office will be based in Singapore marking a significant step in the foundation’s global expansion. The announcement was made during the Philanthropy Asia Summit 2025, where Bill Gates emphasized the role of Singapore as a hub for scientific research and philanthropic collaboration. Here’s what we know about Gates Foundation Singapore.
What is the Gates Foundation in Singapore?
Bill Gates office in Singapore is supported by the Economic Development Board (EDB). It aims to deepen partnerships with governments, philanthropists, and research institutions across the region. Meanwhile, it focuses on advancing healthcare, fintech, and artificial intelligence innovations.
The Singapore office will be the foundation’s 11th office worldwide and is expected to serve as a regional anchor to the rest of Southeast Asia. The office will help to find solutions to address poverty, disease, and inequality in the region.
Singapore’s strategic location and robust research ecosystem were highlighted by EDB as key factors for the decision. Additionally, Bill Gates met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong to discuss collaborations on issues like clean energy, vaccine development, and more.
Interestingly, the decision to set up in Singapore comes as the Gates Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary. Founded in 2000 by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, the foundation is recognised for its work in global health, education, and economic empowerment. Today, it is the third largest charitable foundation in the world.
