Pictures and videos of a highly venomous Black Spitting Cobra slithering through the grass in the serene Sengkang Riverside Park in Singapore has got quite the interaction on Instagram. The unusual sighting was posted to Instagram by Singaporean photographer Daniel known as shutterbugzz118 on July 21.
The viral pictures has sparked concern and interest among the public on Instagram. Daniel stated in the posts that it was his first time to encounter a ”snake in the wild” and he only realised that it was a highly venomous snake after he took pictures of the creature in the park. Daniel continued by saying he is thankful the creature remained calm throughout.
Although snake sightings are common in Singapore, a black spitting cobra sighting is indeed rare. Many Singaporeans left comments on the post as they were amazed by the sighting and some even stated Daniel was ”lucky” to encounter such a snake. Meanwhile, others claimed they were ”scared” to go to the park.
Has there been other black spitting cobra sighting in Singapore?
Recent sightings of the extremely venomous Black Spitting Cobra include a 2021 sighting of an aggressive snake at Changi Business Park, as well as in Choa Chu Kang Cemetery, Pasir Ris Park, Punggol Northshore, and Sembawang Crescent in 2023, to name a few. Allegedly, a baby Black Spitting Cobra was observed at a children’s playground in Sembawang in 2023 too.
Black Spitting Cobras are known for a typical defensive posture, where they stand erect with an expanded hood, and hiss loudly. Typically, they are only aggressive or try to attack if they are provoked so always keep your distance. Additionally, they can spray venom from their fangs across one metre which can cause discomfort or temporary blindness.
