Gardens By The Bay will host a magnificent Northern Lights installation starting this May 2024. Borealis is a new immersive light and sound installation created by Switzerland-based artist Dan Acher. The world-famous showcase debuts in Singapore for the first time this weekend on May 4.
Northern Lights, Gardens By The Bay
The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, is recreated using layers of light and cloud particles to mimic the magical splendor of the Northern Lights in places such as Finland and Norway. The outdoor installation is complemented by a soothing soundtrack by French composer Guillaume Desbois.
The ever-changing light show is influenced by wind, humidity, and temperature variations, using a blend of art, technology, and nature. Certainly, visitors will be transported to the Northern Lights at SuperTree Grove.
Visitors can marvel at the Northern Lights in Gardens By The Bay at a preview on May 4 from 7.30pm to 8.15pm. Afterwards on May 5, it will run regularly from 8pm to 8.30pm every Monday, and 9pm to 9.30pm every Saturday and Sunday. Wonderfully, the outdoor showcase is free entry.
Interestingly, Borealis has travelled to more than 40 cities worldwide including major cities in Australia, United States, and Europe. Definitely, one of the most unique experiences to do this season in Singapore.
Science behind The Northern Lights
The Northern Lights is a spectacular display of coloured lights seen in the night sky in high-latitude regions around the Arctic Circle. The phenomenon is caused by the interaction between the Earth’s magnetic field, the atmosphere, and charged particles from the sun known as solar wind. Interestingly, the aurora borealis is commonly green but other colours include blue, purple, dark red, and pink.
The mesmerising display is best witnessed during the winter months, from September to March, when the nights are long and dark. The best locations to view the Northern Lights includes Iceland, Alaska, northern Scandinavia, one of the most romantic destinations Finland, and parts of Canada.
