Bugis is cool, guys.
We all know just how great the neighbourhood of Bugis is, but now it’s being recognized around the world! In a list compiled by Time Out, with the help of many experts and surveys, Bugis has been ranked 29 of the world’s coolest areas in 2020. This also gives it bragging rights to be the coolest neighbourhood in the whole of Singapore. [Featured image: Leroy Tan, Unsplash].
Bugis is Singapore’s colour-kissed area, with buildings painted with all sorts of variety. The spot was once a port for pirates, and now it’s you’re typical up-and-coming arty area. Bugis is swimming with cafes, bars, shops and galleries, making a trip there all the more essential if you haven’t yet visited. Bugis is also well known for the heavily frequented Bugis Junction shopping mall.
Gelam Gallery in Bugis also owns the bragging rights of being Singapore’s first outdoor gallery, after opening last year. Here, you’ll find plenty of stunning murals that truly sum up the areas life and vibrancy.
Elsewhere in Bugis, you’ll find the glorious Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple. This has stood since 1884, and is a beautiful part of the Bugis history, along with the equally stunning Hajjah Fatimah mosque which predates even the temple! This architectural wonder has stood since 1846, and is a wonderful base for the Islam faith in Singapore.
Bugis has the culture, the food, the history and much more that makes it more than worthy of its place as one of the coolest areas on the planet. Maybe next year it’ll have climbed even further up the list? But, alas, we’ll have to wait for that.
