The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) have announced plans to build five new hawker centres, as part of a comprehensive effort to enhance food accessibility and affordability, in Singapore. The plan to build new hawker centres in Singapore is part of a larger $1 billion investment over the next 20 to 30 years. Additionally, this plan includes upgrades to existing hawker centres to evolve with community needs. Here’s what we know about the new hawker centres in Singapore 2025:
New hawker centres Singapore
This announcement comes as part of Singapore’s ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance its iconic hawker culture under the Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme 2.0 (HUP 2.0). The government stated that they will place new hawker centres in strategic locations in both new and existing housing estates. Although, these locations have not been disclosed.
The Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Koh Pho Koon emphasized that these new hawker centres will ensure more residents can access affordable and delicious hawker food. Meanwhile, the initiative aims to create vibrant community spaces and incorporate features for multi-generational families.
Wonderfully, two of the five new hawker centres are set to open in 2025. These first one is the Bukit Batok West Hawker Centre featuring 22 food stalls and more than 400 seats at 469 Bukit Batok West Avenue 9. While, Punggol Coast Hawker Centre at 84 Punggol Way features 40 food stalls and more than 680 seats. Both centres are designed with high ceilings, improved ventilation, and spacious seating zones to enhance the dining experience.
The government first built Singapore hawker centres in the 1960s and over the decades these locations have become much-loved community dining spots for Singaporeans. In fact, this expansion follows the successful establishment of 14 hawker centres in newer housing estates since 2011.
