Singapore has experienced a series of flash floods over the past few months. And again, flash floods may batter Singapore this weekend according to reports. Unfortunately, the monsoon surge will bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the region between January 10 and 13, 2025. Singapore’s national water agency PUB and the National Environment Agency (NEA) have warned that intense downpours could temporarily overwhelm drainage system. This could lead to widespread flooding in vulnerable areas. Here’s what we know:
Flash flood Singapore
The monsoon surge in Singapore, caused by strengthen winds over the South China Sea, is expected to result in moderate to heavy thundery showers. Additionally, daily minimum temperatures may drop to as low as 22°C, with this wet weather, offering unusually cool conditions for the tropical city-state.
Residents are advised to stay informed about flood alerts in Singapore and be cautious when travelling during this period. Meanwhile, government officials have also noted that rainfall levels are projected to be above average for the first half of January 2025.
To mitigate risks, PUB has urged residents to avoid flood-prone zones and prepare for disruptions. Motorists are advised against driving through flooded areas, while pedestrians should avoid walking in knee-deep water.
Singaporeans are encouraged to use tools such as My ENV App and PUB’s Telegram Channel for real-time updates on rain weather and flood conditions in Singapore.
Why is Singapore experiencing more flooding?
Singapore’s weather patterns seem to be heavily impacted by climate change. In recent years, there have been more frequent and intense storms and flash floods have become a recurring problem. This highlights the need for continued public awareness and the construction of stronger drainage systems in the city.
