Hong Kong action legend Jackie Chan swapped the movie set for a Singaporean classroom on July 7—bringing cheers and inspiration to more than 900 students at Pei Chun Public School in Toa Payoh. Facilitated by the Lim Family Foundation, the 72-year-old superstar’s visit was aimed at motivating local youth and engaging with scholars from the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship. Wonderfully, Chan and local dignitaries were welcomed with a vibrant medley of wushu, lion, and dragon dance performances put on by the students. Here’s what we know about Jackie Chan in Singapore.
How did the Jackie Chan student talk leave a lasting impression today?
Chan reflected on his grueling childhood, drawing a stark contrast between his early days and modern education, during his candid address to the upper primary pupils. He shared: ”Looking at you today made me remember my childhood years and humble beginnings. I had no hope,”
Meanwhile, he recalled how his only solace was a bowl of plain rice and avoiding his teacher’s cane. Additionally, he detailed the intense discipline of his Peking opera and wushu training—reminding students that they are fortunate to learn in a supportive environment where their success is driven entirely by their own hard work rather than fear of corporal punishment.
Beyond tales of his rigorous martial arts upbringing, Chan passionately urged the students to cultivate ambition and a spirit of giving. He challenged the youths to look beyond their own achievements, advising them that when they eventually become successful, it is their duty to help others, and emphasized that everyday acts of kindness are necessary.
Plus, Chan delighted the crowd by showing off some quick moves with the dragon’s pearl and spontaneously serenading the students with his song ”Hard to Say Goodbye” before his departure, leaving a lasting impression of resilience, discipline, and humility.
