Johor Bahru’s hotel scene is about to get a luxurious upgrade in 2026 with the debut of JW Marriott. The new property will open in the former site of Hotel Thistle Johor Bahru located around 10 minutes drive from the checkpoint with Singapore—bringing fresh life and an international flair to a familiar seafront landmark. This will be the second JW Marriott to enter Malaysia after JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur. Therefore, travellers can escape to a modern luxury urban resort across the causeway by December 2026. Here’s what we know about JW Marriott coming to Johor Bahru.
What can travellers expect from JW Marriott in Johor Bahru?
Developed by YTL Hotels in partnership with Marriott International, the 1.9-hecatre property is expected to offer around 410 rooms and suites, contemporary interiors, and panoramic views, alongside executive lounges, an outdoor resort pool, tennis and pickleball courts, a kids club, spa, extensive event facilities, and much more.
Meanwhile, guests can look forward to an all-day restaurant, drooling bakery, coffee kiosk, Chinese restaurant, smokehouse and lobby lounge. Plus, JW Marriott’s signature JW Garden will add a touch of greenery to the new JB hotel. In fact, it’s positioned as one of the most anticipated openings in southern Malaysia.
The Thistle Hotel Johor Bahru, which is the property to be redeveloped by YTL Hotels, was a popular hotel that permanently closed on September 30 this year. Previously, it offered stylish accommodation, wellness, dining, and more near the causeway.
Wonderfully, JW Marriott Johor Bahru will be located near key roads and just minutes from the upcoming RTS Link’s Bukit Chagar station and the new CIQ. Certainly, this new five-star hotel is perfect for both leisure and business travellers from Singapore. More to follow.
