In a groundbreaking move for Singapore’s food scene, edible mealworms have been introduced at Sheng Siong supermarkets. This marks the first time such edible insect products are available for purchase in retail outlets in the region. The product, branded InsectYumz Mealworms, is sold in a 25g snack pack. Excellently, the edible mealworms are located in the snacks and confectioneries section of all of the 76 Sheng Siong outlets islandwide. Here’s what we know about the mealworms sold in Singapore:
Supermarket mealworms
The mealworms available at Sheng Siong outlets are produced by Insect Food Pte Ltd. In fact, these mealworms are dehydrated and marketed as having a mild nutty flavour with no added seasoning. Plus, they are farmed under regulated conditions and created under SFA guidelines.
The product, branded InsectYumz Mealworms, is sold in a 25g snack pack and it is priced at $4.90. Consumers can opt to eat the mealworms on its own or add to their favourite foods at home. Additionally, these mealworms are an alternative protein source despite hesitation by the public to eat them.
This launch reflects a growing trends towards sustainable foods and the normalisation of insect consumption, following the Singapore Food Agency’s (SFA) approval of 16 insect species for human consumption last year. In addition, there are plans to expand the offerings of insect-based snacks at supermarkets like crickets and silkworms in the near future.
