The MRT system in Singapore is experiencing ongoing disruptions on the East-West Line (EWL) which has impacted thousands of commuters. This is due to a power fault that began on September 25 when an old train was being withdrawn to the Ulu Pandan depot, resulting in damage to the tracks, including the running rails and the third rail. Unfortunately, this disruption means that there are no services between Jurong East and Buona Vista, which has caused a serious inconvenience for commuters. Here’s what we know:
MRT train disruption
The impact of the Singapore MRT breakdown means that nine stations on the EWL line are effected. These include Boon Lay, Lakeside, Chinese Garden, Jurong East, Clementi, Dover, Buona Vista, Commonwealth, and Queenstown. In the past 24 hours, commuters faced longer journeys and had to use alternative transport routes. In fact, this incident marks one of the longest MRT service disruptions in the history of Singapore.
Meanwhile, SMRT is offering free shuttle trains services between Boon Lay and Jurong East, as well as Queenstown and Buona Vista, and a free regular bus service between Boon Lay and Queenstown.
Recently, Singapore has seen a series of train delays causing frustration among Singaporeans. On September 17, there was a two-hour delay during the evening rush hour on the Circle Line due to a power fault. And on September 18, a fire on the same line halted services.
Many commuters to took social media and reddit to complain and express their concern over repeated MRT disruptions in Singapore.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT are working to repair the damage so MRT Singapore services can resume. However, the Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said there is a possibility that train service delays could extend beyond September 26. Has this MRT train disruption affected you?
