Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing announced on August 19 that the National Day Parade (NDP) 2026 will be held at National Stadium in Singapore. The move marks a return to the venue, located at the Singapore Sports Hub, where the parade was last held in 2016. In fact, the parade only took place at the current new National Stadium that one time. Before this, NDP was held at the old National Stadium from 1976 to 2006, followed by events at Marina Bay until 2015, while it was undergoing redevelopment. Here’s what we know about the 2026 location change.
NDP 2026 returns to National Stadium
According to Minister Chan’s statement, NDP 2026 at National Stadium allows for a larger audience capacity of around 55,000 compared to the 27,000 at the Padang—where recent parades have been held. Additionally, the minister said it will enable more Singaporeans to experience the celebrations live, as well as bring fresh ideas and fresh performances to a fresh venue.
This announcement was made during the NDP 2025 appreciation function at the Surbana Jurong Campus on August 19. Defence Minister Chan thanked those who contributed to the success of NDP 2025 and encouraged everyone to share ideas for the next event in 2026.
The decision follows years of NDP being primarily held at the Padang and the former floating platform at Marina Bay—due in part to renovations followed by COVID-19 disruptions. Meanwhile, the Singapore Sports Hub took over the management of National Stadium in late 2022—paving the way for the return of the iconic parade to this spectacular venue.
Although the venue change to National Stadium offers greater capacity and a historic connection—many Singaporeans are divided on the change. Some users took to social media to appreciate the larger capacity and expressed positivity over the move. However, others expressed concern, particularly about the viewing experience of the fireworks while some worried that there would not be much visibility of outdoor displays compared to Marina Bay.
Overall, organisers aim to make the event a special and meaningful experience for everyone involved next year.
