Train services between Tanah Merah and Tampines MRT stations in Singapore will be suspended for a short time this December. Commuters will need to make other arrangements between December 7 to 10, 2024 as the closure takes place for safety reasons. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has stated that the works are necessary to connect the tracks from the East-West Line (EWL) to the new East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID) – which is set to open in 2026. Here’s what we know about the EWL train suspension this December:
EWL train suspension
The EWL train suspension is set to disrupt commuters in December 2024 in Singapore. The closure of the tracks is required for safety reasons as it involves the removal and replacement of about 80 metres of existing tracks, sleepers, and a third rail along the EWL viaduct. Additionally, power supply systems will need to be reinstalled and new turnout tracks will be installed to connect the ECID with the EWL. Indeed, this is a vital step in enhancing the train development works.
LTA has arranged for shuttle bus services during the MRT closure to operate between Tampines, Simei, and Tanah Merah stations to accommodate commuters during this period. These buses will run every three to five minutes to maintain the same fare structure as the train services in Singapore. Meanwhile, shuttle trains will operate at various intervals on other affected sections of the EWL. These include locations like Tampines to Pasir Ris and Tanah Merah to Changi Airport.
Commuters are advised to plan their journeys ahead and opt for alternative routes using other MRT lines. LTA states that commuters can expect up to 30 minutes of additional travel time during this time. Although, the timing of the closure carefully coincides with the children’s school holidays when there will be less commuters.
Overall, here’s the important EWL train suspension points for commuters to remember:
- Closure Dates: December 7 to 10, 2024
- Affected Stations: Tanah Merah and Tampines
- Shuttle Bus Services: Operates every three to five minutes between Tampines, Simei, and Tanah Merah
