There’s something about sky shows that fascinate Singaporeans. From supermoons to the Perseid spectacle and Draconids a few weeks ago…any cosmic event quickly becomes the talk of the town. And this October 2025, another stunning meteor shower is about to grace local skies: The Orionid Meteor Shower. Expect a fast and bright meteor shower with an incredible speed of about 66km per second. The peak will occur on the nights of October 21 and 22. Here’s what you should know about the yearly meteor shower.
What is the Orionid Meteor Shower?
The Orionids Meteor Shower occurs when Earth passes through the debris left by Comet 1P/Halley, otherwise known as Halley’s Comet. As the debris enters Earth’s atmosphere, it heats up and produces stunning shooting stars, creating a meteor shower. The Orionids usually reach their peak in mid-October each year and are regarded as one of the most impressive meteor showers annually.
In fact, the Orionids are active between October 2 and November 7. The Orionids meteor shower should peak on October 21 and 22 with best viewing times between midnight and dawn—specifically after 2am as the radiant point of the Orion constellation will be higher.
Stargazes can expect to see up to 20 meteors per hour under ideal night-sky conditions this October 2025.
What to expect in Singapore
Singapore’s light pollution and unpredictable weather means fewer visible streaks. Although, patience can help you spot a few dazzling meteors after midnight if skies clear. The best times to view the Orionids in Singapore is after 2am.
Notable locations to view the meteor shower include open spaces such as Marina Barrage and East Coast Park, as well as quieter beaches like Changi Beach, nature parks, open-air car parks, and more.
