Singapore is famous for its vast green spaces, and has been named one of the most sustainable destinations on the planet. So, it’s no surprise that this extends to the hotels. And, in an effort to promote sustainable travel, we went inside PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering – which has a seven year streak as Asia’s Leading Green Hotel – to give our readers an inside look at what a 5-star green hotel looks like and how you can benefit from this.
Located in the Central Business District and stone throw from Chinatown, PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering first launched in 2013 with its compelling hotel-in-a-garden concept by Pan Pacific Hotels Group. Ten years later, the architectural masterpiece still manages to mesmerises passerbys’ on the streets below.
Inside the hotel, you’ll find eco-friendly amenities, gorgeous nature-themed rooms, and other world-class facilities that make it the perfect green staycation in Singapore. Here’s what we learned on our visit to discover why it is leading the way in sustainable tourism.
Design & Sustainability
PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering was designed by renowned local architects, WOHA. The distinctive built-up, high-rise building is inspired by Bali rice fields, which is prominent once you arrive at the exterior of the lobby, with both the lobby ceiling and outdoor entrance ceiling resembling a stone rice-paddy field.
The leading green hotel was also built using elements of the earth like green moss carpet in the lobby, glass allowing for plenty of natural sunlight, peddles, water like through various indoor ponds, and light and dark wooden panels to complete its natural concept.
Expect to see more than 50 plant varieties spread across the hotel and its four sky gardens, which also boasts a range of eco-friendly features such as Singapore’s first zero-energy system using solar power, rain sensors, light saving, water conservation, edible gardens, a plastic-free policy and much more. Impressively, the rainwater harvesting system helps to grow the garden and saves more than six million litres of water per year.
Facilities
Be dazzled by the facilities inside the hotel which also reflects sustainable living and invites you to change your daily habits and go green.
First, one of the most magnificent attractions is The Wellness Floor on Level 5. It boasts a large infinity pool, colourful cabanas resembling bird cages that’s superb for ig-worthy pictures, a 300m lush garden walkway that’s perfect for a quick jog, and plenty of shade for those who don’t like much sun. Particularly, I found this floor to be quite peaceful, and the perfect place to relax and breathe clean air, with the sound of waterfalls just feet away.
Additionally, guests can swing by the glass-fitted gym that looks out over the infinity pool, take a dip in the soothing jacuzzi or even treat themselves to a massage or facial in the holistic spa – all on the same floor. Otherwise, take your laptop poolside and lounge around while tackling your workload.
Dining
On the ground floor, the open concept space connects the lobby, reception, a small coffee bar and Lime Restaurant. With floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offering plenty of light, it’s a bright space for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The open-kitchen was actually serving a delicious buffet lunch, consisting of locally-inspired dishes, upon my arrival.
I was particularly impressed by the exclusive Collection Club Lounge on the top floor at Level 16. In a modern, chic setting, enjoy 360-degree views of the city while tucking into eco-conscious dishes or sipping refreshing drinks. For me, it resembled an NYC-style condo instead of a rooftop lounge inside a hotel in Singapore. Nevertheless, it’s a blissful place for a cocktail date.
There’s a hidden rooftop garden situated next to the Collection Club Lounge, where herbs and other organic produce is grown and used in dishes, for an authentic food experience.
Rooms
There are 367 rooms, with tropical garden views from Clarke Quay to Hong Lim Park, Chinatown and the CBD, which was almost at full capacity on the day of my visit.
Guests can choose between Urban Deluxe, Signature Executive, Urban Suite, Lifestyle Premier suitable for business travellers, Collection Club varieties and signature suites. Each stylish room is fitted with natural products, recycle bins and materials to incorporate eco-living habits, alongside entertainment and free Wi-Fi.
Certainly, PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering is one of the best green staycations in Singapore. The landmark hotel enhances guest experience, through incorporating green incentives and leading the way in sustainable tourism by promoting a care about the planet. This concrete jungle is the sister of PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay – which is just as exquisite. Book your staycation here.
