Southeast Asia train travel is set to mark a significant milestone with the opening of a new direct train service. The direct train service is set to connect Malaysia’s Penang to Bangkok in Thailand in early 2025. This route, operated jointly by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), will link Bang Sue Grand Terminal in Bangkok to Butterworth in Penang via Padang Besar. Here’s what we know about the new direct train service between Penang and Bangkok:
Penang to Bangkok train
The new cross-border train service aims to provide a seamless and scenic travel experience between the two vibrant destinations. This means that travellers don’t need to worry about multiple transfers and air routes.
The new route connecting Penang and Bangkok will initially operate on a 6-month trail. The new route is set to boost tourism and trade between Thailand and Malaysia. Travellers can look forward to an eco-friendly journey through Penang’s rich heritage and Bangkok’s bustling urban landscape.
In fact, this rail connection is reviving a once historic Bangkok-Butterworth train route which was discontinued in 2016. With its promise of cultural exploration, breathtaking scenery, and convenient travel, the Bangkok-Penang train route is set to become a favourite among Southeast Asia locals and international tourists.
How long will the new train route take?
The new direct train from Penang to Bangkok is expected to take an estimate of around 17 hours. This estimate is based on the overnight train service from Padang Besar (the border station between Malaysia and Thailand) to Bangkok. But if you include the short train ride from Penang’s Butterworth Station to Padang Besar, the total travel time may add to around 19 hours. Additionally, travellers can enjoy a scenic overnight journey with sleeper bed available. Plus, it’s a more eco-friendly option to flying.
There are currently no booking options for the Penang Bangkok railway 2025.
