Your journey at Portals begins by tracing a path from ancient myths, legends and folklore into the stories that gave rise to modern fiction. Across eight themed zones, each chapter unfolds like stepping into a different era of human imagination, showing how we have always invented other worlds long before modern “fantasy” and “sci-fi” were genres with names. 

What sets this experience apart is its atmosphere. There are no screens demanding your attention, no rush from one display to the next. Instead, the focus rests on the details and craftsmanship, giving you room to absorb what you’re looking at. At the heart of it all is a remarkable collection of over 300 original artworks, including vintage and contemporary cover art that helped readers first picture entire universes before reading the first page. For many, these pieces will feel deeply nostalgic, the exact images that sparked a childhood love for fantasy and sci-fi, finally seen up close for the first time. Alongside them are books, collectibles and memorabilia that trace the evolution of these genres across decades. 

The most striking features of Portals are three monumental dioramas, each built at a scale guaranteed to leave you in awe, with over 10,000 hand-painted miniatures. The centerpiece diorama brings Atlantis to life, with intricate details that reward visitors for paying close attention. Another captures a vast fantasy battlefield frozen mid-conflict, where every figure contributes to a larger story unfolding before your eyes, while the third diorama shifts towards science fiction, telling its own story of imagination.

• This was much better than I expected. We were told it’ll be about 60-90 mins to see everything but we spent close to 3 hours instead. There are loads of artwork and miniatures on display, let alone the mind-blowing SFF collection; take a moment to speak with the curator/owner if you get the chance because he’s definitely passionate about stories as a whole (I know what I’ll be reading next).
