
A power outage struck parts of Singapore today (June 2, 2025). Particularly, residents and businesses in Hougang were left without electricity for a brief period from around 11.15am. The disruption affected daily routines, with many reporting that traffic lights went dark in the area, causing inconvenience for both motorists and pedestrians. This comes just after a power outage was reported over the weekend on May 31 at Equinix’s flagship SG1 data centre. Here’s what we know about the power outage in Singapore.
Who was affected by the power outage?
Today’s power outage caused significant disruption in commercial spaces such as Hougang RiverCourt Mall. A food court operated told reports they had to refund customers after the sudden loss of power which meant cooking operations stopped. According to reports, the blackout lasted around 20 minutes for most businesses, with some reporting that gas supplies were also interrupted.
Meanwhile, some social media users quickly took to platforms like Reddit and Facebook to share their experiences. Notably, some stated that the blackout extended to nearby Sengkang. Although, official reports have yet to confirm this.
Singapore’s main electricity provider, SP Group, responded swiftly by deploying officers to the affected locations to restore power fast. Electricity had been fully restored to Hougang just after 11.30am according to the group. However, the cause of the power outage is still under investigation by the SP Group and the Energy Market Authority. Although, the group apologized to the public for the inconvenienced caused.
Additionally, the major power outage on Saturday, May 31, at Equinix disrupted services for multiple internet service providers and triggered widespread connectivity issues across Singapore. This incident lasted from 11.09am to 12.24pm. Although, it was caused by equipment failure during scheduled maintenance.
