Parents get ready for a game-changing boost to your work-life balance. In a major move announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the National Day Rally on Aug 23, Singapore is completely overhauling its childcare leave system. Rather than tying your leave entitlement to the age of your youngest child, the new system scales based on the number of children you have. Under the new scheme, working parents with children aged 12 and below will now receive eight days of childcare leave annually for one child, 10 days for two children, and 12 days if you have three or more. Here’s the key information.
What this means for families & employers
To ensure this expansion doesn’t penalize businesses or derail careers, the government is stepping in to foot the bill. Employers will now be fully reimbursed for the entire duration of all statutory child-related leave schemes.
This includes the newly expanded childcare leave, maternity leave, and the highly anticipated 10-week shared parental leave. PM Wong emphasized that this shift is designed to help companies build family-friendly workplaces without bearing the brunt of the costs—ensuring that becoming a parent never becomes a career disadvantage.
Beyond leave, the 2026 Rally also unveiled the massive SG Child Support Package, replacing the Baby Bonus with up to $62,000 in direct cash and credits—totaling around $70,000 in government support per child from birth to age 17.
Meanwhile, the official start date for the new Singapore childcare leave scheme has yet to be announced. Although, the immediate impact on families will be massive. For instance, a working couple with three primary school children will see their combined childcare leave skyrocket from a mere four days under the old system to an impressive 24 days annually.
Overall, Singapore is actively committed to supporting the parenthood journey and make life easier for those with children.
