Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) announced today (September 3) the reopening of Tanjong Beach. The beach was the most impacted as a result of the oil spill on June 14, 2024.
This marks the full reopening of all beaches on Sentosa Island after a Netherlands-flagged dredger collided with a stationary bunker vessel which led to significant oil contamination along the coastlines around Singapore.
Tanjong Beach reopens
The reopening has been carried out in accordance with relevant national guidelines. This was to ensure that water quality at Tanjong Beach has returned to normal levels, said Sentosa Development Corporation.
The reopening marks a significant recovery milestone, ahead of a three month cleanup schedule, which involved more than 800 cleaning personnel and 2,300 volunteers. In fact, the cleanup of more than 3,750 tonnes of oil-soaked sand and debris has been removed and all beaches on Sentosa have been declared safe for public use.
Wonderfully, water quality have returned to normal levels for swimming and sea activities. So, it’s perfect for a picnic or water fun over the school holidays this week in Singapore. Otherwise, you can head to one of Sentosa’s best beach clubs to catch some rays.
Sentosa is excited to welcome back visitors to all three beaches after the oil spill in June caused chaos for locals and travellers.
