Singapore’s renowned independent cinema and arts venue, The Projector, has announced its closure effective immediately on August 19, 2025—bringing a significant chapter of the city’s film and cultural landscape to an end. For more than 10 years, The Projector has been at the forefront of championing alternative award-winning films, local creativity, and community-led programmes, transforming its flagship space at Golden Mile Tower into an incubator for artists, filmmakers, and diverse audiences. From hosting major festivals like the Singapore International Film Festival to organising vintage markets and poetry slams, The Projector was a cultural force just as much as a cinema. Here’s what we know about The Projector Singapore closure.
Why has The Projector Singapore shut down?
The decision to enter voluntary liquidation comes amidst a challenging climate for cinemas and food & beverages businesses in Singapore. The Projector’s Founder Karen Tan cited operational costs, shifting viewer habits, and a global decline in cinema attendance making its independent model unsustainable. Additionally, broader challenges in Singapore’s arts sector, where limited resources and evolving consume behaviours, make it difficult for creativity to thrive.
Meanwhile, she expressed deep gratitude and sorrow at the closure, acknowledging the dedication of staff, collaborators, and the loyal community that helped shape The Projector’s unique identity. If Singapore wants to thrive, it must find a way for creative and cultural businesses to survive, she added.

Notably, all screenings ahead have been cancelled and there are no tickets available anymore on the website. According to reports, all refund claims for tickets, memberships, vouchers, or more, must be submitted via an appointed liquidator.
The Projector Singapore opened its doors at the spectacular Golden Mile Tower in 2014. For 11 years, it was Singapore’s pre-eminent independent cinema and events space that brought global entertained to a diverse audience in the city-state. It operated from Riverside Point, The Cathay, Cineleisure, and its flagship outlet at Golden Mile Tower.
So now where will creatives gather to experience alternative cinema, unique culture, and events after the Projector Singapore closure?
