Van Gogh’s Career
At only 37 years old, Van Gogh departed from this earth, having sold only one painting. His outlook on life was somber, and in his last letters to his brother he described feelings of being a financial burden to his family and failing at his pursuit of becoming an artist.
It was only after his death, that Van Gogh’s sister in-law Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, started to dedicate her time in promoting his work. Through publishing the extensive letters that Van Gogh wrote, detailing his artistic vision, as well as showcasing the vast collection of paintings he left behind, Van Gogh’s recognition started to spread.
Van Gogh’s Death
Throughout his life, Van Gogh had been a troubled man and suffered from various mental illnesses that often led him to spend time in asylums. His death occurred after a self- inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach, which he died from days later. While his behaviours and mental health history all corroborate a suicidal mindset, there are also other speculations. Many people think that his death was actually due to a local teen accidentally shooting him in the stomach. Wanting to protect the boy, Van Gogh claimed suicide.
The truth is still debated, but what we do know is that we lost an incredible artist far too soon. We will never know what Van Gogh might have accomplished had he been given the recognition and time that he deserved.
