In recent news, the Singapore government has officially approved permanent 4am liquor permits for nightlife venues across the Boat Quay Historic District, Clarke Quay Conservation Area, and the Upper Circular Road area. Following a highly successful year-long trial that kicked off last August, customers no longer have to worry about the drinks drying up early on Thursday and Friday nights, securing the Singapore River precinct’s status as the ultimate late-night lifestyle destination. Why did Singapore decide to make the 4AM drink sales permanent?
The permanent green light comes after the pilot program yielded overwhelming interest and encouraging results from both businesses and patrons. Over the course of the trial, the Singapore Police Force approved an impressive 92 applications from bars and clubs seeking to extend their liquor trading hours until 4am.
Additionally, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) approved 37 applications for new nightlife uses within the Boat Quay area—injecting fresh energy and new venue concepts into the city’s booming nightlife sector.
Beyond the extended bar hours, the newly formalized measures bring back a favourite weekend staple: regular street closures along Circular Road. This car-free zone will host events and pedestrian-friendly activities offering a vibrant, safe, and bustling street party setting.
