If you’re a frequent weekend visitor to Johor Bahru, there’s a huge chance you’ve strolled the brightly lit halls of this mega mall, eaten at its crowded restaurants, or even ice skated in the middle of it. But as you carry your shopping bags past gleaming shopfronts, you probably don’t realize you’re walking on grounds that spent two decades as Malaysia’s most notorious ghost mall. Before it became a thriving shopping hotspot known as Paradigm Mall just 15 minutes drive from the border, it was infamous for phantom hitchhikers, terrifying urban legends, and supernatural encounters.
Long before it became a bustling weekend destination, this massive structure along Skudai Highway was known by a different name with a chilling history: Kemayan City. The venue was abandoned for twenty years before restructuring and rebranding to Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru. Here’s why you’ll be looking twice at the shadows on your next shopping run.

Kemayan City history & ghost stories
The story of Kemayan City began in the optimistic boom times of the 1990s. The mega mall was meant to be one of the largest in Johor. In fact, it was roughly 70 to 80 percent complete when disaster struck.
Unfortunately, the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis halted the project entirely. The developers pulled out, the cranes were dismantled, and the hollow concrete structure was left behind to rot in the tropical heat.
For 20 years, the abandoned Kemayan City loomed over the highway. Swallowed by overgrown vegetation, plagued by stagnant water, and darkness, the decaying mall became a magnet for urban explorers, ghost hunters, and dark rituals—so it earned the title of JB’s Ghost Mall.

Some wild urban legends include an unsuspecting group of Singaporeans who crossed the border for a late-night shopping trip. Apparently, they saw the site fully operational and went inside to purchase clothes and food from pale shopkeepers. The horrifying twist? When they returned to Singapore, they looked in their bags only to find dead leaves and twigs.
Other ghost stories include taxi drivers picking up passengers near the site who mysteriously vanished mid ride, along with accounts of floating or teleporting female apparitions, and screams echoing from the flooded basement levels. Definitely, it was the ultimate haunted spot years ago.
Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru today
Today, the mall has become JB’s Paradigm Mall—spanning over three million square feet of GFA with seven levels of retail—making it one of the largest and most popular malls in the southern region.

WCT Holdings purchased the abandoned real estate site in 2012 and turned it into the iconic existing concrete building. They stripped the rot away, reinforced the foundations, and spent years transforming the cursed ruins into a modern architectural marvel.
In November 2017, the notorious Kemayan City had been completely reborn as Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru. It features an epic indoor ice-skating rink, arcade games, a state-of-the-art cinema, an indoor climbing gym, and nearly 600 vibrant retail stores including KKV, UNIQLO, and Village Grocer.

Honestly, it’s wild to think about how this place went from a decaying, haunted complex to the massive retail empire we all shop at today just 15 minutes from the border. The perfect Halloween scare!
