Are you a huge McDonald’s lover? Today, it’s hard to imagine Singapore without biting into an iconic McSpicy or dipping your fries into those famous little packets of chili sauce. From a single, record-breaking storefront to a nationwide fast food empire…the evolution of McDonald’s in Singapore is a fascinating journey. What began as an exclusive taste of America’s popular burgers, evolved over nearly 50 years, into an everyday local obsession.
Since its historic arrival in 1979, the Golden Arches has expanded from a lone flagship at Liat Towers into a massive network of over 150 restaurants operating across the island today.
Singapore’s first McDonald’s history
When the country’s very first McDonald’s opened its doors on October 20, 1979 at Orchard Road’s Liat Towers, it didn’t just draw a crowd—it ended up setting a Guinness World Record for the most hamburgers served in a single day. The opening turned into a full-blown frenzy as hungry Singaporeans lined up to get their hands on a Big Mac. In fact, the world record title was held until the 1990s when it was broken in Beijing, China.
The Liat Towers McDonald’s quickly became a cultural landmark for a generation. It was the top destination for childhood birthday parties, weekend family outings, and teenage hangouts where french fries cost a fraction of what they do today.

However, the original outlet only operated for a decade until October 1989—despite its explosive debut and immense popularity.
Interestingly, that exact piece of prime Orchard Road real estate is still flipping burgers today—but for a very different brand. Following stints by Burger King and Wendy’s, the historic corner was eventually take over the premium burger chain Shake Shack in August 2020.
Fascinatingly, the building has a strong track record as a launchpad for American food giants. Just a few units from where the record-breaking McDonald’s once stood, Singapore’s very first Starbucks opened back in 1996.
Meanwhile, the oldest existing McDonald’s restaurant still in operation in Singapore is located at People’s Park Complex in Chinatown. In fact, it has been open since November 1979. Plus, the first drive-thru opened at East Coast Park in 1982.
