All travellers arriving into Singapore will be subjected to enhanced security checks at all checkpoints from September 9 to 14, 2024. Singapore has implemented these enhanced security checks at all its land, air, and sea checkpoints due to a ”heightened security risk” in the region. There is speculation that these new measures relate to the Asia-Pacific tour of Pope Francis all the way from Italy. Although, specific details have not been disclosed by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
Indeed, the tightened security measures coincide with Pope Francis’s visit to Singapore from September 11 to 13. His visit to Singapore is expected to draw large crowds of more than 50,000 people when he hosts a mass at National Stadium. In fact, Singapore is the Pope’s last stop on his 12-day tour around Asia Pacific.
Travellers entering Singapore during this period should expect delays and are advised to allocate extra time for immigration procedures due to the intensified security checks.
Indonesian authorities arrested seven individuals who were allegedly planning attacks during the Catholic leader’s visit to Jakarta in Indonesia. The suspects posted online terror threats in relation to this matter. Therefore, it makes sense that Singapore is raising its security levels for one week. What do you think of these new measurements?
