Lau Pa Sat is celebrating its 130th anniversary in Singapore today. In honour of the occasion, the iconic hawker centre and landmark collaborated with famous Singaporean artists to highlight Singapore’s heritage and culture. One of these collaborations is an alluring new heritage mural by Yip Yew Chong.
Yip Yew Chong new heritage mural
The main collaboration is with well-known visual artist Yip Yew Chong on the exterior of the Lau Pa Sat building. Wonderfully, visitors can admire a beautiful 10-metre-long heritage mural that is allegedly Chong’s final street mural. It illustrates a visual journey through time depicting Lau Pa Sat’s past as the first Telok Ayer Market, opened in 1824, to how it transformed into a vibrant food destination in the 1990s.
The mural showcases Yip Yew Chong’s mastery in capturing the essence of the past and bringing real life stories and memories from history to life. It took six days to create. In fact, Chong is known for nearly 100 unique art murals across the island paying tribute to Singapore’s rich history and culture.
Ah Guo artworks
Meanwhile, other collaborations with artists include exclusive merchandise with local illustrator Ah Guo from May 1. The merchandise such as notebooks, pouches, and stationary are decorated with watercolour illustrations to showcase Lau Pa Sat’s rich history and evolution over the years.
Ah Gu’s merchandise is made up of a three-part art series. For instance, the first artwork depicts a bustling dawn scene of Lau Pa Sat in the early days as a market by the sea. Plus, there’ll be limited edition art collectables available.
Additionally, you’ll spot an iconic new logo around the hawker centre on merchandise and staff uniforms. Lau Pa Sat’s Food Folks features more than 100 local brands to indulge from. The venue frequently collaborates with local artists and musicians to weave together food, music, and art in one lively destination.
