Singapore is famous for many things, from its hawker centres with authentic cheap eats, to ig-worthy places like SuperTree Grove, iconic rooftops such as Marina Bay Sands, dreamy viewpoints, and many more. But do you even know which is the longest street in Singapore?
Contrary to belief, Yio Chu Kang Road is not the longest street on the island. In fact, Bukit Timah Road is the longest road in Singapore. The road has a length of 25km, stretching from the city centre to Woodlands Road, and all the way to Johor Bahru in Malaysia.
History of Bukit Timah Road – longest road in Singapore
Here’s a little history lesson for you now that you know Bukit Timah Road is the longest road in Singapore:
Bukit Timah Road did not always look like what it looks like today. It was first built in 1845 after the Japanese occupation of the British stronghold in Singapore. In later years, a canal was built to stop flooding between Bukit Timah and Dunearn Road. Meanwhile, major landmarks like the abandoned Bukit Timah Railway Station – built in 1932 – are significant along the route.
Additionally, tunnels and flyovers were constructed from the 1970s, most notably, the Newtown Flyover – which became the first Semi-Expressway standalone road, featuring both an underpass and flyover that goes in the same direction.
Bukit Timah Road today
Today, the lively Bukit Timah Road route stretches from Little India, to Newton Road, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Bukit Timah and Bukit Panjang. While it boasts vibrant shopping malls and restaurants, schools, MRT connections, beautiful walkways, cafes, and access to some of the best hiking trails in Singapore.
