Just when Singaporeans thought they could enjoy Mother’s Day in peace, the MRT decided to serve up yet another track fault in Singapore. This time, it turned Yishun into a scene of chaos due to a track point fault between Yishun and Sembawang MRT stations on the North-South Line (NSL) on May 11, 2025. Commuters travel plans quickly turned into guessing which bus queue was longer to take instead. As news of the breakdown spread, social media lit up with a familiar chorus of frustration, and Singaporeans unleashed their signature attitudes, when it comes to these frequent MRT breakdowns. Here’s what we know about the latest MRT breakdown.
MRT breakdown – May 2025
The incident began around 2.24pm when SMRT announced that passengers should expect an additional 10 minutes of travel time in the affected area. However, the situation persisted for more than three hours and SMRT issued multiple updates throughout the afternoon until a final clearing at 5.47pm. Although, the company provided free regular bus services between Yishun and Woodlands to help ease the inconvenience.
Many expressed frustration at this disruption, especially given the fact it was Mother’s Day, a time when families were travelling to celebrate together. So once again, the nation found itself united online as users flooded social media with their commentary. From people pointing out that MRT breakdowns are now as regular as kopi breaks to citizen’s criticizing the government’s infrastructure planning, and others sarcastically throwing jokes like ”65% voted for this” in relation to the latest election…Singaporeans didn’t lost their sense of frustration or humour.
The latest MRT breakdown in Singapore comes after a string of previous train faults the past year in the city-state.
