Singapore is one of the greatest cities in the world…according to those who don’t live here. In fact, an estimated 13 million tourists visit Singapore yearly to see the iconic attractions, indulge on our famous local cuisine, and immerse themselves in our heritage and culture. However, some residents just don’t get it with many claiming Singapore is overrated. So we took to our social media to ask YOU to name the most overrated neighbourhoods in Singapore, and boy did you deliver. Here are six of the most overrated places in Singapore according to Singaporeans. Plus, we dropped a few underrated neighbourhoods suggested by you at the end of this article too.
1. Holland Village
An overwhelming amount of our followers said that Holland Village is overhyped. The location is famous for a quirky atmosphere, diverse dining options, a vibrant nightlife, and family-friendly facilities. But to you, that just doesn’t cut it. Many visitors feel that Holland Village has lost its unique charm due to western chain stores, high prices compared to other parts of Singapore, and a noisy and crowded environment over the weekends. Plus, parking can be a nightmare according to locals. Regardless, Holland Village remains a popular destination despite the criticism it faces.
2. Orchard
Singaporeans claim that Orchard is one of the most overrated locations in Singapore. While it boasts some of the best shopping malls, it has gained mixed reviews with visitors complaining about high prices that are less accessible to average shoppers, more expensive brands than overseas, and a loss of connection. This has led to the perception that Orchard is overhyped. Nevertheless, it is in close proximity to many high-end hotels, popular restaurants, and easy access to the city centre for those for like a taste of luxury.
3. River Valley
Our social media followers named River Valley as one of the most overrated places in Singapore. Both tourists and locals complain that attractions are less impressive than expected, the roads need better improvements, and there’s a declining standard of food quality, as well as high property prices in the area. Contradictory, River Valley is one of the Top 10 best neighbourhoods in Singapore according to Singaporeans. Therefore, there are mixed reviews when it comes to this neighbourhood. What do you think?
4. Sentosa Island
Sentosa Island is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Singapore known for luxurious residential areas, resort-like living, cool attractions, and close proximity to the island’s beaches. But the bustling escape from the city centre has been recognised as overhyped. Visitors believe it can get very overcrowded during peak seasons and it is quite pricey which can be unfair to budget-conscious travellers. Despite the criticism, Sentosa Island remains a bucket list thing to do for every type of traveller in Singapore.
5. Tiong Bahru
The historic district of Tiong Bahru in Singapore is known for its authentic local markets, vibrant cafes, and a blend of old-world charm with 1930s Art Deco architecture and modern facilities. However, some locals believe the area is totally overhyped. The reasons for this include overrated and expensive food establishments, too many queues, and a loss of authentic and traditionalism in the area due to wanting to appeal to foreigners. Regardless, the hipster enclave is a place everyone still goes.
6. East Coast
We don’t know what you all got against the East Coast, but apparently stunning seafront views, some of the world’s most beautiful streets, beachfront strolls, and recreational activities just don’t cut it. Singapore’s East Coast has been named as an overrated location according to locals via our social media. Although, people still choose East Coast Park as a picnic spot, place to get fit with outdoor activities, and relax by sea.
On the other hand, Singaporeans gave their opinion on the most underrated neighbourhoods in Singapore which included places such as Yishun and Queenstown.
