Are your Bali flights cancelled? A powerful Indonesia volcano eruption from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Nusa Tenggara province has sent a massive ash plume of more than 10,000 metres into the sky on June 17, 2025. The volcano eruption, visible from as far as 150 kilometres away, forced Indonesian authorities to expand the danger zone to an 8-kilometre radius around the crater and triggered the evacuation of several villages, as well as flight cancellations from Singapore to Bali, and beyond. Here’s what we know.
Major Bali volcano eruption disrupts air travel
The Bali volcano eruption prompted Indonesia’s volcanology agency to raise the alert to its highest level—as thick volcanic ash blanked the region up to 10km into the sky.
Unfortunately, the volcanic activity has caused significant disruption to international air travel with dozens of flights to and from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali cancelled or delayed. Majority of Singapore to Bali flight routes have been affected. These include Singapore Airlines, Scoot, and Jetstar Asia cancelling flights from Changi Airport to Denpasar—citing safety concerns due to ash cloud.
Additionally, other affected airlines include Air India, Air New Zealand, and Juneyao Airlines, while AirAsia suspended several domestic and regional services.
Although the airport in Bali remains operational, flight cancellations are being handled on a case-by-case basis depending on the route and prevailing ash conditions. Meanwhile, travellers are strongly advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates. Indeed, the volcano eruption Indonesia has stranded holidaymakers and forced visitors to reschedule or cancel their plans.
Authorities continue to monitor Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki closely—warning of potential lahar floods if heavy rains occur and urging residents and tourists to remain vigilant. No causalities have been reported so far, but the ongoing volcanic threat serves as a reminder of Indonesia situated along the active Pacific Ring of Fire. More to follow.
