Train services on the East-West Line in Singapore were disrupted for approximately five hours today (August 6, 2025). The SMRT train delay was caused by a point machine fault near Jurong East. The disruption began around 6am and caused extensive delays and inconvenience for commuters. Initially, SMRT advisories warned of a 15-minute delay for eastbound travel between Boon Lay and Clementi—but later extended it to Buona Vista—affecting multiple stations including Dover and Jurong East. Singaporeans, no strangers to MRT delays, quickly took to social media to blend their annoyance with humour recalling past MRT breakdowns where delays have become as regular as kopi breaks and joking that today’s slow train pace gave them enough time to finish a whole book. Here’s what happened with the smrt train delay on August 6.
East-West line breakdown
SMRT reported that trains needed to be driven at a reduced speeds of 18km/h to ensure safe operations while engineers worked to repair the faulty point machine—a critical component that controls train movements at rail junctions. As the situation unfolded, morning commuters faced waiting times of up to 45 minutes. Meanwhile, social media posts indicated train delays being even longer than the official estimates.
Although, SMRT activated free bridging bus services during the train fault and service suspension to provide alternate transport between affected stations. However, some commuters expressed frustration over unclear information about alternative bus options. There were reports of disorderly queues and a lack of clear direction at affected stations.
Additionally, the East West Line train fault caused congestion on other lines—with ripple effects reported at key interchange stations such as Marsiling and Admiralty.
Full East-West Line train services were restored at around 11.05am. Meanwhile, train speeds returned to normal following the completion of repairs. More to follow on the Singapore MRT breakdown.
