Singapore has implemented enhanced security checks at all checkpoints into the city-state from January 9 to January 22, 2025. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has warned of heightened measures and delays at all of Singapore’s land, air, and sea checkpoints. Allegedly, the enhanced measures are in response to a ”high security situation” in the region. Here’s what we know:
Enhanced security checks
Travellers are advised to plan for delays and allocate additional time for immigration clearance. These enhanced procedures apply to both vehicles and travellers entering Singapore. Those entering the city-state are being urged to cooperate with authorities and remain patient as checks may lead to longer wait times at immigration checkpoints.
The timing of these measures coincides with a planned visit by the U.S Vice President Kamala Harris on January 15. However, reports suggest that Mrs. Harris has cancelled her trip due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, California. The Vice President was set to meet with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and visit Changi Naval Base.
Although, officials have not provided specific details on why these security protocols remain in place or if there is any potential threat. Nevertheless, these vigilance strategies highlight how Singapore is prioritizing security amid global uncertainties to ensure public safety.
In fact, this is the second enhanced security check in Singapore since September 2024.
