A first-of-its-kind LRT coaches reef has opened on a secret island in Malaysia. Tioman Island, located just 164km from Singapore, has become the site of an innovative marine conservation project where two retired Light Rail Transit (LRT) coaches have been submerged underwater to create artificial reefs. In fact, it’s the first time such a project has been developed in Malaysia.
The unique underwater LRT coaches in Monkey Bay on Tioman Island are set to attract tourists and divers to explore this new attraction. Meanwhile, the goal of the project is to enhance marine biodiversity and alleviate pressure on natural coral reefs by creating artificial reefs. Plus, it may provide a boost to the local economy and attract more tourists.
The artificial LRT coaches reef opened in July 2024. The coaches were donated by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and officially launched by His Royal Highness The Sultan of Pahang in Pulau Tioman. Interestingly, the LRT train trolleys donated were first used back in 1998 before they were discontinued in 2023.
Certainly, it’s a one-of-a-kind diving experience for water lovers visiting the area. Plus, Tioman Island is one of Asia’s best kept secret islands so you can’t miss it.
