After an extensive one-year restoration, the National Museum of Singapore is set to unveil its fully revamped flagship Singapore History Gallery on October 10, 2026. Marking its first complete overhaul in two decades, the highly-anticipated reopening arrives just two days ahead of the museum’s 139th anniversary. Wonderfully, the new space promises to take visitors on a captivating 700-year journey (from Singapore’s 14th century origins to its bustling present) reflecting new historical research and modern visitor expectations. In fact, it’s the gallery’s first full revamp since 2006. Here’s what to expect.
What to expect
The gallery explores the resonant question of Who Are We? through the lens of multiculturalism—under the guidance of over 160 public focus group participants and 12 local academics. Interestingly, the exhibition merges broad historical milestones with intimate, lived experiences, featuring diverse voices from eyewitnesses, contemporary artists, and more.
Excitingly, visitors begin their immersive adventure in Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time before moving on to the expanded new space. Be fascinated by never-before-seen items including a a restored 1970s HDB lift exploring the shift from kampong living, an authentic Nanyang coffee roasting machine from Ho Tit Coffee Powder Factory, and a stunning decade-spanning timelapse of the cityscape by acclaimed photographer Keith Loutit.
Delightfully, there’ll be a massive 9-day Stories of Everyday celebration from October 10 to 18 to mark the gallery’s return and the museum’s birthday. Running from 10am to 7pm, visitors can enjoy an art market, live shows, craft workshops, meet-and-greets, and the grand reveal of a brand-new museum mascot inspired by a prized collection artefact.
