The renowned Ministry of Crab restaurant, famous in Sri Lanka, opened its first outlet in Singapore this July. Excitingly, the iconic seafood restaurant opens on Dempsey Road today after running successful pop-ups here in recent years. Here’s what we know about Ministry of Crab in Singapore:
Ministry of Crab – Singapore
The popular seafood restaurant, which is the only crab eatery to make it onto Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, is housed in an old Dutch hospital with a colonial-style setting. It boasts 68 seats. Meanwhile, it is the sixth global outlet for the brand after Bangkok, Maldives, Mumbai, Shanghai, and Chengdu.
Ministry of Crab was founded by renowned Dharshan Munidasa together with Sri Lankan cricket stars Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena in 2011 in the capital city of Colombo in Sri Lanka. The restaurant is known for its exceptional crustacean dishes and one of the most famous restaurants in the capital in Sri Lanka. Highlights include the signature Garlic Chilli Crab, fresh Sri Lankan Mud Crab, and other delicious crab varieties. Wonderfully, all crabs are air-flown from Sri Lanka live three times a week.
Menu highlights
Particularly, guests need to try the iconic mud crabs, which are served from 500g to more than 2kg, as well as the giant freshwater prawns known as Prawnzilla which are served up to a whopping 500g.
Other highlights include Crab Liver Pâté, crabs from $75 for 500g such as Garlic Chilli Crab using Italian olive oil and Japanese soy sauce, Black Pepper Dashi Crab, Sri Lankan Curry Crab, prawn varieties, traditional Sri Lanka street breads, Garlic Rice, Pol Sambol, Chicken Curry Rice, and plenty more favourites. Be sure to finish with a dessert such as Coconut Crème Brûlée and Shibuya Style French Toast.
The seafood is normally caught in Sri Lankan waters and each dish is perfected through the MasterChef’s dual-heritage recipes and using techniques like baked, steamed, or cooked in curries and other sauces.
