Digital wallets and QR codes are practically everywhere in Singapore, but cash remains a daily necessity for many of our older generation. Recognising this reality, the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS) has just announced a landmark initiative with DBS, OCBC, UOB, and NETS. The banks have jointly committed to placing an ATM, bank branch, or cashpoint within 500 metres of every single HDB block by the end of 2027. This exciting collaboration means residents will soon be able to grab cash for their coffee or hawker stall run with a short, easy walk—no matter which neighbourhood they live in. Here’s what we know about the Singapore hdb atm access 2027.
Why are Singapore banks expanding ATM & cash access?
This move comes at a crucial time as Singapore officially transitioned into a super-aged society this year—with one in five citizens now aged 65 and above. The sweeping pledge is the cornerstone of a new industry playbook, Banking a Longevity Society, which aims to ensure seniors aren’t alienated by the relentless push toward digital banking.
While tech-savvy residents might happily tap their phones to pay and don’t even own a bank card, financial institutions are openly acknowledging that physical banking channels offer a necessary sense of security, dignity, and familiarity for the elderly. Certainly, a refreshing industry pivot for our most vulnerable citizens.
Additionally, the banks and NETS will ensure that key public transport hubs, hawker centres, and major supermarkets will have their 500-metre cash-access radius by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the network is expanding cashpoints to allow customers to withdraw cash at participating merchant checkouts while paying via NETS.
Plus, the Singapore ATM network expansion will see the HDB banks introduce common guidelines to help frontline staff spot signs of cognitive decline to create a safer banking ecosystem for all.
